And did I mention that she was 93 years old? Now that’s impressive!īy the late 1800s, the area was a popular tourist destination. The individual credited for discovering Flume Gorge is Jess Guernsey, who, according to local legend, stumbled upon the natural wonder in 1808. The gorge also features a beautiful overlook to a pool that’s 40 feet deep. The granite gorge is narrow but deep (up to 90 feet in some places) and has an impressive amount of water running through it. Have any of you been to Flume Gorge? Nestled in the middle of White Mountain National Forest and Franconia Notch State Park, it’s a 2-mile trail that winds along a natural, 800-foot-long gorge. Two hours northwest of Boston, we hopped off the interstate and spent 90 minutes at Flume Gorge. It was pouring rain on the day we drove through New Hampshire, but the fall colors were so gorgeous that we just had to stop somewhere and take in the scenery. Handsome has been to Boston, but this was my first time to any of the New England states. It was a quick trip, but we packed a lot in. We spent a few days in Boston and the surrounding area (photos from Lexington, Concord, the coast, and the Freedom Trail coming soon), drove up to Quebec City through New Hampshire, and then returned to Boston via the stunning Maine coast. I could tell avoiding people in the photo frame was going to be a challenge but the crowds thinned out a bit further along and with a little patience, it is possible even on busy days.Last month, I shared photos from our visit to historic Plymouth, Massachusetts. This was a very popular spot for photos but I was able to find a great shot after crossing the bridge and looking back for a nice shot with no people. The Flume Covered Bridge was built in 1886 making it one of the oldest covered bridges in the state. The first part of the trail walks through the forest and down to a covered bridge and waterway. Everything about this reminded us of visiting Watkins Glen State Park in the Finger Lakes – gorges are so cool! We waited in the car until 9AM to avoid the cold rain and once the line opened, it was a matter of minutes until we were showing our reservation confirmation and permitted inside. The day we visited was a rainy morning and even with our early arrival for the 9AM open, there was already a line waiting to get in. The reservation slots accommodate about 300 people an hour so the park can absorb quite a number of people. On the day we visited, they were not permitted walkup ticket purchases due to the crowds. They do list an option of purchasing onsite but it is more expensive and subject to availability. Fortunately, booking a visit includes an entry ticket and a reservation so you do not need to do two separate transactions. The loop around all the attractions is 2 miles long and does require walking up and down hill a bit with some stairs to navigate as well.Īs of this post, visiting requires an entry ticket and a reservation made ahead of time. This area is very popular to visit as it is built up for guests with walking paths and boardwalks to see everything without entailing a proper hike. There is a natural gorge at the base of Mount Liberty in Franconia Notch State called Flume Gorge. The nature in the White Mountains of New Hampshire are stunning giving views not just from high above but down below as well.
